La Noria Coffee Farm has been a family undertaking since the 1960s. It is located north of the Town of Líbano (spanish word for Lebanon), named by the first settlers in the mid 19th century as they encountered a valley rich in cedar trees. The climate here is temperate throughout the year, with generous seasonal rainfall.
The farm covers an extension of 173 acres over hilly terrain, spanning between 1250 to 1600 meters above sea level. Around half of the land is planted with coffee trees, totalling around 200 thousand coffee plants. Native trees are kept surrounding the water streams that traverse the mountain and in a 60 acre area of bushland reserve. Companion crops of plantain banana trees are scattered through the coffee lots, providing shade and delicious fruit. Beans, cassava, various citrus and vegetables are grown for domestic consumption, and fish can be farmed in a pond fed by a permanent water stream. Like the Colombian economy and the coffee sector itself, La Noria has been through highs and lows since it was established. However, in the so called “Zona Cafetera” of Colombia, growing coffee for more than a century has put this activity at the core of the culture and traditions. Hence, despite challenging circumstances, people here have an ever growing commitment to carry on cultivating coffee in pursuit of the best crop. As the early farmer would grow a large family to work the land, farming would become the common interest and uniting element for the family through generations. Many aspects of society may have changed over time, but farming is still the common ground for those that grow up in this world heritage listed cultural landscape. |
By 2005, while remaining actively involved in the coffee trade, Mum and Dad had followed a professional career in an urban environment and brought up three sons; with the passing of Grand dad, they decided to turn towards their origins and take over the farm. Then they led a venture to renovate the crops and modernise processes, aiming for excellence in quality and sustainability.
